Richard Bach:
Every problem has a gift for you in its hands.

Mother Teresa: We can do no great things; only small things with great love.

Unknown: The easiest thing to find is fault.

I am easily inspired by real issues; things that are concerned with the human race. I believe that one will become much stronger after a misfortune. Therefore, we need to remind ourselves that something positive will generate from a difficulty.

I wish to emphasize that we have become closer and connected after experiencing tragedy after tragedy. Help was reached out and given promptly and generously. All of us came together for one main aim; to lessen the suffering and to show that we care for those with desperate need.

The Exhibition

Idea Development

The idea to make the artwork comes from my observations of my surroundings and real issues that affected me.

We do not live in seclusion and unfortunate events that happened since the beginning of the year of 2005 was traumatic and sorrowful. It started in agonising tsunami which caused the death of thousands.

However, it is not the only one. Before this, we faced SARS, bird flu and HMF disease. Nonetheless, it makes us stronger and more prepared to face future unfortunate circumstances.

People are more concerned with the mishaps that happened to other people. They feel their sorrows, their lost and tried to help in any way they can. We are afterall, human and not devoid of feelings and we try to show a side of humanity which is in all of us....

Inspired by this feeling, It motivates me to do an artwork on love, bonding, friendship, concern and love which is beyond geographical boundaries, racial and religion.

Work-In-Progress

The rose symbolise harmony when help is being reached out to the people in need in the affected areas of the tsunami. All over the world people are giving necessities because they feel for people who were affected by the tsunami.

The flower is not only symbolising harmony but the love that was generated from the cause. The spirit of giving, sharing, compassionate, concern are expressed by one object that symbolise love and longing; The Red Rose.

The Southeast Asia map is drawn on a red, 2.5m X 1.8m Cloth. This will not be the actual size because it will be scrunched up (gathered) at the sides to exudes the feeling of togetherness. Hoping to achieve the feeling of "We are never Alone" in the artwork.

Southeast asia map is drawn on the cloth to show that the affected countries are mainly the islands of Southeast Asia.

The help that was reached to these countries extended from all over the world which is symbolised by present of the strings of various colours which is braided and knotted.

connected

The strings which is twisted around the flowers will be all over the work. Symbolising the effort and help that was reached from all over the world and given to the needy.

White is a neutral colour.

It is used in the artwork to symbolise purity in the intention and notion felt by the artwork.

The white netting also emphasize the distant of this incident to us. I am an Asian. The unfortunate incident that happened is just "Out of the Window". This is the metaphor I am working on. The incident that happened is around me.

I wish to share my observations and thoughts; which is the cause for Art as a medium to reach the masses.

The Significance of Materials Chosen

1. Red cloth

Red is strength, compassionate and beautiful. It is the most important colour in the artwork. Without it, the artwork would not achieved the desired effect of captivating the audience.

2. White netting

Draws people to the work even further. Viewers are provoked to look further, deeper, within and into the artwork. Developing their thoughts into an image which is surrounded with emotions. Beautiful, sorrowful, concerned, twisted, connected, togetherness and love. These are the emotions and thoughts that wish to be achieved in this artwork.

3. Southeast Asia Map

Painted with acrylic to give it a strong and bold outlook.

4. Strings- Braided
